A league of our own-NCAA softball

by Bill Podojil

As springtime settles slowly into the North Coast, a group of men and women from the lesbian and gay community are conditioning their mitts, swinging their aluminum bats and brandishing their new

team names and colors. All of this is in preparation for May 2, opening day for North Coast Athletic Association softball. As the league enters its eleventh season, more players than ever are showing an interest in this "all-American" sport. As

Michelle Ennis, NCAA league officer adds, "The league is made up of people from all skill levels. Some teams last year had a very competitive attitude while other teams were more interested in having a good time than winning. There is a team for every skill level and interest level." Ennis emphasizes that while some teams may be more serious than others, the overall objective is for everyone to have fun.

The playing season lasts about 10 weeks and consists of over 80 games. On July 11, the league will sponsor a "Fan Appreciation Day,” consisting of special events for loyal fans, and an awards ceremony and banquet is scheduled for August 29 to honor the top teams and players.

Eight to ten teams are in the process of being formed, with each team made up of between 15 and 19 members. Last year there were over 120 people playing in the league and there are hopes for at least 150 this year. There is still room for interested players. Ennis also said that the league is looking for scorekeepers, statisticians and, of course, spectators! The Chronicle Sports section will highlight team scores and list the schedule for upcoming games. To get more information on the league, game times, or if you want to sign up for a team, please call either Michelle Ennis at 892-0886 or Mark at 734-3284. Now let's get out there and support our teams!

The few, the frozen, the Cyclones

by Bill Podojil

As spring tries to get a foothold on the Cleveland area, a few brave cyclists took to the streets for the inaugural ride of the Cleveland Cyclones. With a membership list of over 35 men and women, the world of gay cycling will never be the same in Cleveland, at least once the weather warms up.

Five cycling diehards braved the "brisk" April weather and charted the thawing Rocky River Metroparks for a 25-mile ride, all desperately trying to catch spring fever. Upcoming group activities include touring throughout Northeast Ohio, organized area cycling events, and the Cyclone Logo Con-

test. A small group to participate in a major gay cycling event of the year, the Boston to Provincetown Race, is also being formed.

Weekend rides are being planned for the Spring, Summer and Fall, as well as some "after work stress release" weekday rides. Interested riders from all levels of cycling are encouraged to participate. City Bike, a bike shop located in Cleveland's Warehouse District, has offered to host bicycle repair and riding workshops for the group in the future. They have also featured the group in their current customer newsletter. For information on-joining the Cyclones, call Bill at 651-1621. Warm weather is just around the corner!
